Decorating For Fall

img_0094Shorter days and cooler nights announce that fall is here.  Looking for a few simple ideas to decorate for the fall season?  Try these.

Start your transformation at the front door.  Swap your summer wreath for one that has an autumn theme.  Next, change the doormat for one with warmer colors like rust, cranberry and gold.  If you have the room – say, a front porch or steps leading up to the front door – decorate this area with a collection of pumpkins, gourds and pots of chrysanthemums. The abundance of warm, vibrant colors should bid an inviting welcome to friends and family.

Once inside, continue the fall theme with a few simple changes.  In the main living space, swap the light-colored summer pillows on your sofa for ones in the rich colors and plush fabrics of the season.  For example, instead of cotton or linen pillows, use ones covered in velvet or chenille.  Plaids are popular during the fall, so add a comfy throw in a coordinating plaid design.  If your sofa or accent chairs have a more casual feel, consider using chair covers in a deep burgundy or gold to add warmth to the room.

Need coordinating accessories for your coffee or end tables?  How about putting a couple of autumn candles (one larger and one smaller), a small stack of books and an ornamental acorn on a tray?  Or a large dish filled with fall colored silk leaves and unshelled pecans.  A bronze or gold pitcher filled with autumn colored flowers and branches makes a great centerpiece for a dining table. Place a runner down the center of the table and position the centerpiece on it.  When setting the table, use dishes, glassware and platters in coordinating colors like rust, green, gold and burgundy to reflect the fall season.

In the kitchen and bathroom, hang towels that reflect a fall design or fall colors. In the bathroom, add a spicy candle or diffuser and a dish of small, decorative soaps to the countertop. Place a fall-themed rug in the kitchen and use a couple of glass pumpkins on the countertop filled with either greenery or snacks like cookies or nuts.

Fall colors and accessories create a warm cozy feel in your home at this time of year, and it doesn’t have to be a major project.  Focus your efforts on just two or three areas of the home and you’ll probably be able to accomplish the transformation in only a few hours.
