The hot, sunny days of summer are here and you may want to spend more time outside. Do you have a small outdoor space – like a patio, deck or porch – where you can make this happen? Is it a space that welcomes you … or does the area need an update? A few simple changes can make a big difference, but you’ll need to define how you want to use the space. For example, do you want the space to be more of a private retreat? If so, start by putting several large planters filled with flowers or shrubs in the space to give it a cozy feel. Next, add a lounge chair and ottoman or a sectional for curling up with a book or magazine. A bistro set would also make this an ideal spot for Sunday brunch.
If your outdoor area is mainly for entertaining, then a BBQ grill and larger patio set (table and chairs) is a must. Investing in an outdoor umbrella or retractable awning will ensure that guests are protected from intense sun. A small bar is a great option for serving drinks, and adding some lighting to the area will allow you to entertain even after dark. If your outdoor space is a front porch, this is a great spot for watching the world go by and for interacting with neighbors. Add a couple of comfortable rocking chairs or a large porch swing, as well as several hanging plants and perhaps an overhead fan and you won’t be able to keep the neighbors away.
Once your space has the basics, you’ll need a few decorative touches to complete the look. Seat cushions and pillows add pops of color. Solar lanterns can be decorative as well as functional. How about an outdoor rug? A gazing ball? A small fountain or a whimsical statue? Choose a couple of features which really makes the space your own, but remember the “less is more” principle. With a little effort, you’ve updated your outdoor space. Now … enjoy it.
