Cluttered Room

It’s a brand new year and you’ve probably made a list of new year resolutions, right?  If one of your goals is to become more organized, you are not alone. It may seem like an overwhelming task, but the hardest part is actually starting. Here are a few tips to get you going.

Make a list of the specific tasks you need to accomplish & set a timeline for getting them done. A vague intention to”clean out your office” is not specific enough.  Instead, make a list definite tasks and check each one off as it’s done.  Decide what can be discarded and what you want to keep.  Resist the urge to keep anything that you do not absolutely need – especially items that are broken or outdated.  You can donate items to a charity if they are still useful or if you have multiples of them.  Be creative in finding storage in your home. Add hooks, use over-the-door organizers, use decorative bins or boxes, extend shelving further up the walls, use storage ottomans or benches, make use of every nook.  Designate a place for everything you own. Clutter results when things are left lying about because the do not “belong” anywhere.  Store items in a location near to where they are used so that they can be easily returned to their home after use.  Keep a dump bag/box to make it easy to get rid of unwanted items.  Once the bag is full, donate or discard the items and then return the bag to a place where you can start using it again.  This helps to keep clutter from accumulating.

Getting more organized does take some time and effort, but it’s been shown that we are more efficient and less stressed in an organized environment.  Don’t focus on how much you need to do.  Instead, imagine how wonderful it will feel to spend time in a room – or a home- that is neat and organized.  Aaaahh.
