Sometimes you may want to use a particular theme when decorating- Asian, Moroccan, French Country, Southwestern etc. Themed decorating can be fun, but be careful of overkill. Adding too many themed accessories or pieces of furniture tend to make a room look more like a storefront instead of a home. To avoid this effect, introduce a few themed elements that create the ambience you desire but maintain balance by also including several neutral pieces.
For example, if you wanted to add an Asian feel to a room, maybe introduce an Asian style coffee table and then add either an Asian sculpture or piece of art. Complete your theme by adding a large red candle set on a bed of smooth river stones. Your living room will now whisper a hint of an exotic culture rather than shout the overwhelming presence of everything Asian.
