Starting a New Decorating Project

decorate a living roomA new decorating project can be fun and exciting but you may have been hesitating to begin because you are not sure exactly where to start.  Here are some tips that will make the process easier.

Decide how your room is going to be used. Will you maintain its current purpose or make a change?  Think about how the flooring, furniture, layout and colors will best serve the room’s purpose. Will you need to add more storage or purchase a particular piece of furniture (desk? bed? sofa?) Is the lighting adequate?  What age group will use the room?

Next, determine the scope of the project.  Will this be a complete makeover or a simple update? This step will help you to decide what stays in the room and what needs to be replaced.  You will also be able to estimate how long the project will take and whether you can do the job yourself or need to hire a professional.

Look for inspiration in magazines or online. What sort of mood are you after?  Are you drawn to a particular style or do you prefer a mix of styles?  It is advisable to choose furniture, rugs and window treatments first and then select paint colors.

Be sure to measure the area in your room and draw a rough outline showing the location of doors, windows and closets. Furniture that is either too big or too small will impact the layout – you don’t want to have to block doorways or access to closets so things will fit. What’s more, lack of good flow makes a room uninviting.

If you think about these factors as you plan your decorating project, you should have resolved most of the major stumbling blocks.  No need for any more hesitation – start decorating!
